2013-14 Musicianship and Theory Group Lessons with Liz Davis Maxfield
A cello-based, interactive introduction to music theory and contemporary musicianship taught through playing, listening and writing music. Ear training, chord progressions, intervals, key signatures, beginning transposition, arranging and improvisation include possible topics. An 8-class course taught by Liz Davis Maxfield designed to supplement your cello technique and Classical repertoire with “real life” collaborative musical skills.
These monthly workshops will provide you with the tools you need to:
- Learn music by ear
- Follow a lead sheet
- Arrange a piece of music for cello
- Create original music that has never been played before
- Play a jig
- Analyze music (anything from Bach to Coldplay)
- Solo over a Jazz tune (improvisation)
- Collaborate with other musicians!
Each class will be catered to the interests, levels, and experience of the class members and will build on ideas and techniques learned in previous classes. These group lessons will culminate in a final recital and project demonstrating these newly acquired skills!
1-hour classes are held at the following times (in Megan Boyle’s basement studio room in conjunction with the group class weeks):

Liz Davis Maxfield is an eclectic cellist with extensive experience as a performer, recording artist, and teacher, Liz started playing the cello at the age of ten and she recorded her first album before she turned twelve. Since that time, Liz has recorded ten albums and has been featured on dozens more.
Soon after graduating from Berklee College of Music, she was awarded a Fulbright to study towards a MA in Irish Traditional Music Performance at the University of Limerick. Her book, “The Irish Cello Book: Traditional Tunes and Techniques” (published earlier in 2013 by Berklee Press and Hal Leonard) has garnered positive reviews and has been dubbed “The definitive classic for cellists looking to play Irish music in an authentic and meaningful way.” (Mike Block).
Liz has performed across the globe as a solo artist and with various groups including New Time Ensemble, Folk Arts Quartet, and Ampersand. Her compositions for cello choir are enjoyed by a wide range of cellists, and she teaches folk and alternative cello styles privately, via Skype, and in workshops throughout the nation.
She lives in Provo, Utah with her husband, Andrew Maxfield, and her son, Eliot. She plays a 2007 J.P. Lucas cello.
